About this module

Following the success of the Statistics for Mathematics Teachers Upskilling module, this module will focus on upskilling teachers in relation to the second third of the new Higher Applied Mathematics.

This module is for staff who wish to enhance their knowledge of mathematical modelling in order to teach the SQA Higher Applications of Mathematics.

Assuming no prior knowledge of mathematical modelling, by the end of the course, you'll have developed a good understanding of how to apply, evaluate, analyse and interpret mathematical models, including the suggested learning and teaching contexts set out in the Course Specification for the new Higher.

What you will learn

The SQA curriculum will be covered during the course:

  • modelling a situation mathematically in a given context using appropriate variables, formulae, graphs and/or charts
  • defining appropriate units of measure for variables and checking for consistency
  • evaluating the effects of error and tolerances within mathematical models
  • evaluating and interpreting the output of mathematical models
  • analysing mathematical models and suggesting possible improvements
  • appropriate use of software to support modelling
